World War II

In World War II, invaded the islands (1944) destroying or isolating the Japanese garrisons.
After the Battle of Tarawa ended, the U.S. military capturing individual Japanese bases.
During the war, the islands' population suffered from lack of food and various injuries.

Because of these tests, radioactivity contamination occurred.
